What Documents Do You Need to Apply to a Portuguese University?

Most Portuguese institutions ask for a similar core set of documents, and getting them right the first time is the fastest way to a decision. Missing or improperly certified paperwork is the number one cause of delay we see.

The standard set includes: a valid passport or national ID; your secondary school diploma or previous degree certificate; a full academic transcript with grades and, where applicable, credit hours; proof of language proficiency in English, Portuguese or Spanish depending on the program; a motivation letter; and an updated CV.

Master's and doctoral applicants are frequently asked for additional items: recommendation letters, a research proposal, a portfolio, or professional experience certificates.

Certification matters. Documents issued outside the EU usually require legalisation — an apostille where the Hague Convention applies, or consular legalisation where it does not. Check the requirement for your country before you submit anything.

Every document must be in English or accompanied by a certified translation. Informal translations are rejected. If your transcripts are in another language, arrange certified versions early, since turnaround can take weeks.

Scan everything in colour, keep files under the size limits requested, and make sure names match exactly across passport, diploma and transcript. A discrepancy as small as a missing middle name can trigger a request for clarification.
